Scarborough care provider Saint Cecilia’s is planning to mark this year’s Care Home Open Day with two days of celebrations.
The company will be throwing open the doors of its two care homes; Saint Cecilia’s Care Home and Normanby House, on Friday 28th June from 10am to 3pm to mark the special day.
Then the following day, Saint Cecilia’s Nursing Home is holding a special open day and garden party to mark the occasion and Armed Forces Day.
Managing Director Mike Padgham said: “Care Home Open Day is one of the highlights of the year in social care and this year we are spreading the celebrations across two days to get the most out of it for our residents and guests.
“It promises to be a very special couple of days at all our homes and we very much hope people will come and join in the fun.”
During the morning of 28th June, Normanby House on Belgrave Crescent will welcome the Mayor from 10.30am to 11.30am as part of its celebrations. Then the civic party is expected to join in the fun at Saint Cecilia’s Care Home on Stepney Road from 11.45am to 1pm.
Both homes will have entertainment, events, activities and refreshments throughout the day.
The following day, Saturday 29th June, Saint Cecilia’s Nursing Home on Filey Road will host a special garden party to mark the open day and Armed Forces Day, again from 10am to 3pm.
The home is expecting a visit from BBC television personality Harry Gration and Tonics bar and will also enjoy entertainment, activities and refreshments during the day. It will also have its ‘Tommy’ soldier memorial in the garden as a mark of respect for recent D-Day commemorations.
This year – which marks the seventh National Care Home Open Day – the theme is arts in care and all centres will reflect this in their activities.
National Care Home Open Day is a UK-wide initiative encouraging care homes to open their doors to their local communities to both showcase the care provided and to help create links between those homes and their local communities. Each year more than 4,000 care homes take part.
Saint Cecilia's Nursing Home is staffed by highly-trained, caring staff, including the nursing team, who put the needs of our residents first and adopt the very latest techniques in providing care.
Everything is geared towards ensuring that our nursing home's residents are happy and our overall aim is to provide dedicated, personal care, tailored to individual needs.
There’s always something going on every day at St Cecilia’s!
Aside from the exceptional care on offer we love regular activities, entertainment and outings.
Activities encourage our residents to remain physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially active to keep them stimulated and happy and avoiding isolation.
Typical outings – funded by our residents’ fund – include trips to places like the Sea Life Centre, Eden Camp, Scarborough Cricket Festival and to local farms, tea rooms and so on.
We regularly welcome visiting entertainers, theatre groups, musicians and singers to the home and there’s nothing our residents like more than a sing-song! We also have a Nintendo Wii, which many of the residents enjoy playing on – especially the Wii Fit game!
We love a party and enjoy celebrating our residents’ birthdays and of course special occasions like Christmas, Easter and Valentine’s Day.
There’s plenty of opportunity for some peace and quiet time too and all our lounges have large, flat-screen TVs and plenty of jigsaws, board games and playing cards, as well as the chance to read a newspaper or magazine.
We know our residents value their independence, dignity and pride and that personal appearance is important. We have a member of staff who is a qualified hairdresser who provides a hairdressing service in a specially-equipped room, with professional hair-drying equipment. We also have a visiting chiropodist.
The happiness and input of our residents’ families are paramount to St Cecilia’s. Relatives are welcome at any time and always encouraged to contact us with any questions, concerns or requests. Pets are welcome too. We hold regular relatives' meetings to keep everyone fully up to date with the latest information from St Cecilia's Nursing Home and also publish a bi-monthly newsletter, as well as keeping our website and social media accounts – Facebook and Twitter – up to date!
We seek regular feedback from the residents, their families, visitors to the nursing home and our own staff and strive to improve our care based on that feedback and any other issues that are raised, during inspection for example.
Saint Cecilia’s Nursing Home has 44 bedrooms, most of which are en suite, available for nursing or residential care, depending on the needs of the resident.
We specialise in providing 24-hour nursing care, looking after people with acute and life-limiting illnesses. This includes people who have had strokes, cancer, heart failure, chest and breathing difficulties. We also provide stoma care, catheter care, peg feed care and pressure care.
Working with colleagues at Saint Catherine’s Hospice, we also provide compassionate and professional end of life care at St Cecilia’s too and were the first local nursing home to achieve the seven stars of palliative care with the hospice.
Based on assessment, we can also take residents with dementia, but we do also recommend the specialist dementia care services offered by our sister care provider, St Cecilia’s Care Home.
Each resident has a personal care plan, drawn up with input from the resident or their relative, along with other care professionals. They are regularly reviewed and updated, according to the changing needs of our resident.
Saint Cecilia’s Nursing Home is in the attractive South Cliff area of Scarborough and is just minutes away from the Esplanade, with its sweeping views of Scarborough’s South Bay and of Filey and Flamborough to the south. A parade of shops, including two small supermarkets and a post office, is just a short walk away.
Saint Cecilia’s has all the facilities to ensure our residents enjoy a true, home-from-home atmosphere, in a warm, comfortable and safe environment.
We see a resident’s room as “a blank canvass” and work with each resident to personalise it with their own belongings to make it as comfortable, pleasant and familiar as possible.
Saintt Cecilia’s is blessed with delightful and airy communal spaces for our residents to enjoy. This includes three lounges, each with its own character and facilities, a pleasant dining room and spacious garden.
The building is fully wheelchair-friendly and accessible and we have two lifts to access the upper floors.
